Protecting the Beauty and Longevity of Granite, Marble, and Travertine Surfaces
Congratulations on Your New Natural Stone Countertops!
You’ve made a great choice with natural stone (granite, marble, and/or travertine) for your countertops. Each piece is a unique work of art, crafted over hundreds of thousands of years by Mother Nature herself. No two pieces are exactly alike, making your countertops one-of-a-kind! To help you enjoy their beauty for years to come, it's important to understand the unique characteristics of natural stone.
Understanding the Natural Beauty of Stone
Fissures
These are extremely narrow lines that naturally occur along the boundaries of the stone’s crystal structures. Fissures are different from cracks; fissures are naturally part of the stone, while cracks are caused by external damage or impact. Cracks won’t be covered under the builder’s warranty after closing, but fissures are a normal part of your stone’s character.
Inclusions
These are irregular mineral color patterns that vary in size and shape. They might be round or run through the countertop in a straight line. Inclusions add to the unique look of each stone slab.
Pits
These are tiny holes in the stone that are too small to fill with resin at the factory. They are natural and add to the stone’s character.
Fill
In some slabs, especially exotic granites and marbles, you might notice areas that have been filled. This is a mix of natural materials and resin used to fill larger holes in the slab.
Important: Fissures, inclusions, pits, and fill are all part of the natural beauty of your stone countertops. These features are not considered defects, and your countertops will not be replaced because of them.
What to Expect with Countertop Seams
Seams and lamination lines in natural stone countertops are normal. They will be visible and can be felt when you run your hand over the surface. Seam locations are determined by the layout of your countertop and the size of the stone slabs. Even if you have the same layout as another home, your seam locations might differ due to these factors.
Seam widths and heights can vary from 1/16” to 1/8” depending on installation needs. The placement and size of seams are up to the fabricator, and they are not a reason for replacement or refund.
Protecting Your Countertops with Sealant
Your natural stone countertops have been treated with an impregnating sealer to help reduce the risk of staining. However, keep in mind that sealing won’t completely prevent etching (dull spots caused by acidic substances). To maintain their beauty, wipe up any spills immediately to prevent stains.
Recommendation: Reapply an impregnating sealer once a year to help your countertops resist stains and maintain their protective qualities. Note that etched and stained countertops are not covered under warranty.
Cleaning Your Stone Countertops
To keep your countertops looking their best, follow these simple care tips:
- Protect from Damage: Avoid placing hot items directly on the stone. Use trivets or mats under hot dishes. Be cautious with coffee, red wine, oils, and sodas, as they can stain or damage the stone.
- Clean Up Spills Quickly: Wipe away any spills immediately. Use coasters or paper towels to protect the surface from liquids.
- Daily Cleaning: Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe down your counters daily. For a cleaner, use a product like Bar Keepers Friend Granite and Stone Cleaner and Polish.
- Avoid Harmful Cleaners: Do not use vinegar, bleach, ammonia, cleaners with orange or lemon oil, scouring powder, or liquid bathroom cleansers, as these can damage your stone.
By following these guidelines, you can enjoy the timeless beauty of your natural stone countertops for years to come!
